Brent Smolinsky - McKinsey & Company Revolutionizing Data Center Efficiency v2.0: Benchmarking, Lessons Learned, and Best Practices Revolutionizing Data Center Efficiency v2.0: Benchmarking, Lessons Learned, and Best Practices
Brent Smolinski, McKinsey & Company

Corporate Average Datacenter Efficiency (CADE) is an analytical tool that enables end-user executives to evaluate the overall business performance of their data centers. This session begins with a presentation overview of CADE and how it complements and extends "energy only" metrics such as Green Grid's DCiE. First introduced at Symposium ‘08, CADE's comprehensive approach combines IT, facilities, asset utilization, and energy efficiency,. Methodology improvements, benchmarking results, lessons learned, and best practices will be presented. After the presentation, a panel of end users will discuss how their companies are approaching data center efficiency and what tools they are using to drive improvement. This highly interactive discussion will be especially valuable for senior-level staff charged with strategic planning of enterprise computing and data center requirements.

Industry Progress on Implementing 2008 Recommendations for Revolutionizing Efficiency
Ken Brill and John Stanley, Uptime Institute Inc.

Last year at Symposium 2008, Uptime Institute and McKinsey & Company made bold recommendations to radically improving data center efficiency. Improve asset management. Use Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for investment decisions. Appoint an Energy Czar. What has happened in the last twelve months? Institute research shows that energy consumption in the top 1/3 of Site Uptime Network member sites is growing at around 20 percent per year (down from 27 percent), and survey results indicate that Energy Czar adoption is far from universal. This session provides an in-depth discussion on current status of energy efficient hardware procurement, Energy Czars, TCO, and industry energy use trends. Senior end-user executives will find this session highly beneficial in mapping strategies.
