Ken Brill, Uptime Institute, Inc., and Will Forrest, McKinsey & Company

There's a lot of debate in the industry about what a "good" PUE is and how to judge your data center's efficiency against that of your peers. But who are your peers? Some enterprise facilities have hundreds of hardware types to support and measure downtime in millions of dollars per incident. Big web companies can get really good at running a few types of apps and can use multiple sites to back each other up. Scientific computing engines and others may have yet other needs. As industry leaders (and regulators!) think about where to set efficiency targets, it may be that different "segments" of the IT industry need different goals.
